Our plan for day one included 30 miles and 13 locks....and the conspiracy against that started in the first lock. Canal rules here require engines to be turned off while locking ....and at our first restart battery #1 did not respond. So we switched to #2...and began the discussion about battery issues we'd been having...how long did we think it would be before both starting batteries were depleted...etc. Lock masters seemed willing to let us leave our engine running as long as no other boats were locking through with us. Then as though part of God's grand plan, as we locked through #4, the lock master said we might as well pull over. Seems that a big storm had passed through on Thursday and knocked out the power on Lock #5...they hoped to have power restored by the evening. Next thing we knew, Tim (guy at lock 4) mentioned that there was a store near by that had batteries and offered to take Floyd there. Crew fixed lunch, Floyd fixed battery issue...and poof, Lock 5 had power .... we had two new starting batteries...such perfect timing.
