That afternoon we took the dinghy in to play tourist at the replica of Fort Loudoun. Established in 1756, its purpose was to help the British prevent the French from penetrating the Appalachian region during the French and Indian War.  But tragedy struck in less than two years. A break down in relations between the British and the Cherokee Nation resulted in the execution of 23 Indians....which lead the Cherokees to become anti-British and cut the fort's supply line. The story ends so tragically...after negotiating a surrender the commander led the garrison and others out of the fort...traveled some distance..The next morning Cherokees attacked and killed almost every officer and most of the others.  Eye for an eye, Tooth for a tooth. As we know, the Cherokees were eventually force marched...and their numbers dwindled drastically. Lots of  history here...and because of the new dam, much of the true ground is under water. They raised this fort 17 feet to keep it above water level.
